Wing Chun from all over the asian world.

As the world shrinks more variations of Ving Chun Kuen appear from behind the bamboo curtain and other parts of Asia.
Recent research from the Wing Chun Museum guys has revealed another secret society branch of Ving Chun Kuen - Black Flag Eng Chun Cun (Black Flag Wing Chun Kuen) which has been taught quietly and secretively in Indonesia for the past several decades. I will compile a report/article on this newly discovered old branch more in depth soon, so watch this space. But in brief;

There are/were many secret societies in China during the previous Ching (Manchu) Dynasty and many of those were in southern china where they worked towards the over throwing of the Manchu Empire and restoration of the Ming Dynasty (the empire which was conquered by the Manchu's) A lot of these societies claimed their origins back to the legends of the 5 ancestors who escaped the Manchu destruction of the Southern Shaolin Temple.

Many of the southern Chinese kung fu systems claim their origins similarly. In the popular histories and legends surrounding Wing Chun all variations lead back to the Southern Shaolin temple in Fukien.

According to the leaders of the Black Flag Eng Chun Cun, there were five societies descended from these ancestors and each one was categorized by a different coloured flag;

1.Red Flag
2.Black Flag
3.White Flag
4.Green Flag
5.Yellow Flag

They further state that the martial art of Wing Chun was passed down in two main forms; a male aspect and a female aspect. The Red Flag (Hung Fa Yee Wing Chun Kuen) and Black Flag (Eng Chun Cun) preserve the male aspect of the system.

I find this interesting as the branches descended from Leung Jan* ( including the Yip Man / Ip Man system) has always called itself a female style. Of course male and female have no bearing on the gender of the practitioners but more,on the application of energy and the method of learning used.

Any way this is just a brief outline of the ideas presented by the ongoing research of the Wing Chun Museum. I will update this later with a complete article.

*note - Leung Jan was the grandmaster of Yip Man himself. Leung was the fourth generation inheritor of Wing Chun and learned from Leung Yee Tai and Wong Wah Bo, both secret society members and Cantonese opera performers on the famous Hung Suen (Red Boats)
