Obituary for Lindsay Mutch - From Dominion -Post Newspaper

I am in Wellington having been here to attend my friends funeral and say my final farewells. This obituary was in Saturdays paper for him so thought I would paste it here for those interested in reading it - Awatea

Lindsay Mutch, a man of many words, most of them extremely clever, died in Wellington Hospital on Monday, aged 42.

The death, after a short illness, cut short the life of a writer of great talent, from his hard journalism as a court reporter at the Timaru Herald to his clever blog posts at fuggedaboudid.blogspot.com.

He also built up a following on Twitter, as Lindsa, based on the pure level of wit at his disposal and his unusual, sometimes happily twisted way, of looking at the world.

When news of @Lindsa's death was broken online by a colleague, some of his more than 700 followers responded with thoughts on the guy whom many knew only by his thumbnail image on social networking sites.

One follower, Matt, consoled another by writing "In the words of Lindsa himself: – What if Jesus' name wasn't Jesus at all? What if he was actually called Kevin?".

The Edge radio station's breakfast team were also a large part of Mutch's life.

Host Dom Harvey said he listened to their show a lot and would tweet or email useful ideas and links.

Although the radio team never met Mutch in person, they considered him to be a mate, whose conversations they will miss immensely.

It was not lost on the close-knit Twitter community in New Zealand that his death was announced via the medium, with many saying the master pun-maker would be having a wee chuckle at that.

Mutch started life as a Post Office telephone technician trainee, but it wasn't a happy choice for either party and he ended up working in a fish and chip shop in his hometown, Timaru.

Luckily for him, and the Timaru Herald, its then editor was a regular customer and Mutch badgered him for a job based on his knowledge of spelling, grammar, and the sort of arcane bits of knowledge useful for any reporter to have, and which he never stopped collecting.

As court reporter for the Herald Mutch detailed the many tales of woe that appeared before the Timaru court, and he then took over the farming round, ending his stint as editor of the High Country Herald.

He moved to Wellington in 2005, and after a period of time spent in contract work he signed on as a sub-editor at The Dominion Post. If there was an unusual caption, a witty headline or a pun-laden standfirst in the Property or Job Market sections, it was usually a Mutchism. Not all got through, often on the grounds of excessive surrealism, but enough did to keep him, and the readers, amused.

He always had a few writing projects on the go, with two collections of poetry (Unfinity, in 1995, and Speech Insediment – Recently Fossilised Poetry in 2000), and a bottomless well of ideas.

His latest project was a novel he was writing as part of the Southern Cross Novel Challenge, trying to produce 50,000 words during June. It was a gothic tale of supernatural possession, murder, and ostriches. At last count, he had 38,653 words, but his total was cut short by his illness. In discussing where it was all going, he suggested it wasn't going to end well for the ostriches ...

Mutch was a Qantas award-winning reporter, winning the best feature article for arts and entertainment with a piece on film director Duncan Sarkies, and was a finalist in the motoring section. He also managed to interview many of his music heroes, about whom he had an encyclopaedic knowledge, and he was blessed with a voice that was just right for karaoke.

His greatest attributes, however, was his generosity and good nature, which will be missed most of all, particularly by his family of four sisters, their partners and his nieces and nephews, on whom he doted.
